TOP OF THE POPS 219, 1969

This 1969 transcription disc has a variety of tracks by different artists, including Strawbs' "That Which Once Was Mine" and "Poor Jimmy Wilson".

There is some confusion over when (and for what show) this material was recorded.

  • The transcription disc has a "Top Of The Pops" branding, but that was widely used for discs containing material from a variety of sources.
  • The two tracks appeared (along with a brief Cousins/Hooper interview with Brian Matthews I believe) on the Universal CD 2008 reissue of Strawbs, where it was credited as coming from a John Peel's Top Gear, 12 Jan 1969 (though the interview is clearly not with John Peel). In the interview Brian Matthews comments that this is their first appearance on "Top Of The Pops"!
  • The same tracks were included (without the interview) on Strawbs At The BBC volume 1 in 2010, where it was credited as being recorded for Top Gear 10 Dec 1968.
  • Ken Garner's detailed work "In Session Tonight" lists both tracks as being recorded on 10 Dec 1968 (along with "The Battle" and "I'll Show You Where To Sleep") and broadcast on 12 Jan 1969.
  • Dave Cousins' 1969 diary lists the interview with Brian Matthews at 10.30 am on 10 Jan 1969 in Shepherd's Bush, and the transmission date as 12 Jan 1969. His 1968 diary has an entry on 10 Dec 1968 "Record Top Gear".
  • So from all this I think the music was recorded on 10 Dec 1968 for Top Gear, the interview recorded separately on 10 Jan 1069 with Brian Matthews and these two tracks and interview broadcast on 12 Jan 1969 along with the other two tracks (which didn't make it onto this transcription disc). Will confirm in due course whether the interview is included. "The Battle" appeared on another BBC disc Progressive Pop - 1
