STRAWBSWEBNEWS - July 2005

Sent: Thu, 28 Jul 2005

Hello all

Various bits of news from Strawb-land.

We are beavering away on the new Strawbsweb site, making more progress but
we're still not quite ready yet (I've found a few bits of the site I'd
totally forgotten about - great fun). Strawbsweb will be 9 years old in
August this year, let's hope we're ready to launch the new site during
August to meet the anniversary (can';t believe it's 9 years since I started
this up with about 6 pages on AOL. Be nice to hear from anyone who
remembers the very early site.

Hope to see UK friends at either the Cousins/Conrad show or on the
September UK tour - who else is coming, let me know. It promises to be a
unique occasion with Conny's band and Conny and Dave in various permutations.

Sadly I don't think I'll be able to get across the pond again this year,
but the October/November tour is looking good - see below.

Hope the summer is treating you all well and that you are safe and secure.

Best wishes

DICK GREENER

ACOUSTIC STRAWBS WORKSHOP GIG, 31 AUG 2005, NPL, TEDDINGTON
===========================================================

A new gig added to the itinerary for the September tour. Dave has
announced that this will be a "workshop" concert, with more chat about the
songs and how they get put together, along the lines of some of the shows
they played in the US on the recent tour. More info in due course.

==========================
IF HAIKU THEN YOU CAN ....
==========================

Reminder that the Cousins & Conrad Haiku competition closes at midnight BST
on 31 July.

One of the stunning new tracks in High Seas is Dave Cousins' composition
"Haiku" – lyrics for the song below.

A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry, constructed in three lines of five,
seven, and five syllables respectively. The message of a haiku poem usually
centres on some aspect of spirituality and provokes an emotional response
in the reader. There is also an element of nature about haiku as in the
seasons although the reference is often oblique.

To enter write a Strawbs-related haiku and submit it to the website – send
them by e-mail to haiku@strawbsweb.co.uk.

Two lucky winners chosen by Dave Cousins – one in North America and one in
Europe will get to have lunch with Dave Cousins in North America and
England respectively.

Winners announced: end August. No purchase necessary (though you can if you
want !!!)

HAIKU

Iridescent leaves
Bursting au vert through shadows
Put spring in our step

The height of pleasure
Fleet footed does in bracken
Surrounded by stag

Coven in witch wood
Seeking refuge in colours
A rainfall of tears

Red-breasted robin
Bearing garland of briers
A crumb of cold cheer

ANGEL WINE by ANDREW STILTON
============================

A 46 year old former lawyer now teaching tax law at a "new" university,
with a high flying corporate finance lawyer absentee wife, takes to Friends
Re-united with gusto, catching up with former girlfriend/"what if" lost
love Sally. Strikes a chord with this 46 year old lawyer anyway. A
number of favourable references throughout to Strawbs music, including
quotes from Chas's "Angel Wine" which is the "title track" to this
late-blossoming relationship. Nice touches, plenty of e-mails between the
characters make this a very real sort of book, as I can imagine that's just
how those e-mails would go. A few echoes (top 10 lists) of Nick Hornby's
"High Fidelity", but then I'd imagine that's true of any book where the
music is a central character (and yes we did all create lists in those
days). A very pleasant read.

Published by the author through Publish and Be Damned.

ROSIE HARDMAN/DAVE COUSINS DUET
===============================

Available on CD - very limited edition - the excellent album Stopped In My
Tracks by Rosie Hardman. The album features not only a superb version of
"Grace Darling" but also an otherwise unreleased duet between Rosie and
Dave Cousins - "Lean On Me". Brian Willoughby is on hand to play fluid
guitars throughout. Rosie was one of the best acts I ever booked for my
old folk club in London, a great lady with a great voice.

Just got my copy from www.rosiehardman.com - highly recommended.
